December 2, 2010

Our December meeting was all business – Bob Gregory and his “J.R.” business, that is.  Do you know where you’ll be on Saturday, December 13th?  We’re expecting to see you at Shripwrecks with either your board waxed or your checkbook out (or both).  Jimmy Reilly must be smiling down from heaven as he watches all the committee members work so hard to put on this great event, which just keeps getting bigger and better every year.  And that goes for the surf too – if it’s not mackin’ it can’t be the J.R.

So get your entry forms in before the slots fill up and be sure to get your paws on some raffle tickets.  Debbie Pelosi and her band of solicitors including Peachy, Tom “Slow” Christiansen, Joe “Big Dit” Ditler and Pat “ The Maestro” Mower, among others, have put together a better-than-ever-pile of goods.  That’s in addition to the surfboard auction tickets, which are available for $5 each.  You have an opportunity to win a 9’8” Kane Garden Noserider with a bonus opportunity to win a 7’6” Fish – and you don’t have to be present to win (thank you Pete Johnson!)  There will be another 9’ Noserider raffled off for contestants only.

Jody “Queen of the J.R.” Esquer has once again created an incredible logo for the t-shirts, which will be available for $10 for short sleeve, $15 for long sleeve.  The Brigantine will be providing plenty of great food for lunch, which will be served at 12:30.  The awards ceremony will take place on the beach after the final heats at around 2:00.  There will be plenty of opportunities to help out.  Show up and share some of the spirit of Jimmy Reilly.

Taylor and Marty Jensen are back from Raglan, New Zealand after attending the World Longboard Championships.  Taylor ended the year a very impressive 5th overall (overall, as in WORLDWIDE!)  We heard he surfed extremely well, but the wave gods won in the end – holding out on producing any ridable waves during a big heat.  We’re proud to call you one of our own, Taylor.  Congratulations on a very successful year.

Need to relieve some holiday stress?  Then we’ll be seeing you at the Christmas party on December 20th (our first ever grom-free event.)  Invitations will be arriving soon and all you have to do is RSVP, pay ten bucks and show up with some dancing shoes on.  We’ll have Mai Tai’s ON TAP so don’t plan on running any marathons or operating heavy machinery the next day.  Thank you in advance to Darcie and Randy Nixon for generously cutting us loose in their lovely backyard.  We’re glad you have neighbors that are either very cool or very deaf!

Make sure you’re on the campout list for the Doheny “Gathering of the Tribes” contest at Church’s the first weekend of the New Year.  If you can’t stay the night, come on up and watch some amazing surfers from all over our coast and share in our club sunset spaghetti dinner and campfire bull**** sessions.

Lastly, we all had a lot to be thankful for this past Thanksgiving.  A sweet little swell hit giving us some perfect shoulders with some size and consistency.  There were probably more than a few of us having a hard time lifting our arms at the dinner table after some extended surf sessions.  No doubt, the pilgrims never had it this good.  It was great to share so many waves with so many great surfers and friends in our secret corner of the ocean.

See you at “The J.R.”
